Henry and Friends Memorial Fund

Henry & Friends is an angel fund that is used to help less fortunate families with a cat or dog in need of palliative or end of life care. We started providing palliative care for a Labrador-Border Collie mix named Henry in the spring of 2019. Despite his family’s amazing care and love, Henry passed peacefully in his home with our help. Henry’s mom came to our grieving group and said that she wished that there was a way to help other families so that they could have the same wonderful in-home care for their pets. We discussed starting an angel fund, and it seemed appropriate that we name it after one of the sweetest dogs we knew, Henry. The fund is based on donations and fundraising. Coulter Mobile Veterinary Services will also make a donation to the fund in memory of each pet we help.

About Henry

Henry and Me

I’ve had pets all my life, mostly cats, and loved all of them. Until I met Henry, I never realized the incredible bond that could happen from having a dog in my life. I adopted Henry from a Burlington animal shelter in July of 2006. He was a seven-month-old Black Lab/Border Collie and was given up for adoption because he barked too much. One look in those sweet eyes and I had to have him! After a lot of patience and obedience school, he proved to be an intelligent, talented, loving dog. It didn’t take long for us to become best friends. He would never leave my side, following me anywhere and everywhere—yes, even to the bathroom. I got used to it and actually felt this was how he expressed his love for me. He was always in tune with my feelings and would be there to give me a kiss or snuggle whenever I needed it. Without a word, he would somehow know when I had a bad day and needed his love. One of his favourite things was playing fetch. He had a talent for chasing and catching balls, sticks, and Frisbees. His other favourite thing was going to doggie daycare every Thursday to socialize and play with other dogs. I loved doing this for him to give him a break from being home alone and bored while I was at work. Henry was loved by everyone he met, and I miss him dearly. I keep his memory alive with this memorial contributing to help other pets get the care they need through Dr. Laura’s specialized services. He always loved helping people and other pets feel better. So as time goes on, I will remember our great times together and think that my sweet Henry would definitely want me to do whatever I can to help other pets.

My best friend, I will never forget you and our special bond!

How do I request funds?

At Heart With Wings, our team members are dedicated to providing the best care for your pet. When they feel the need exists and the patient is deserving, they request funds on your pet’s behalf, serving as a champion for your pet. Each team member has their own personal criteria for making the request, ensuring a personalized approach to your pet’s care.

Is this a charity giving handouts to people who cannot afford their pet's care?

Clients must contribute towards treatment costs, and the Fund makes up the difference.  Additionally, owners must exhaust all other means of payment. This could include applying for Scratch Pay, or Farley Foundation Funding. Proof of denial must be presented in order to move forward with an H&F application.

Pet owners must demonstrate an inability to cover necessary care through personal financial means to provide the necessary care for their animal.

Any costs associated with the patient’s care that goes above and beyond this limit must be paid for by the client when service is rendered.

Individuals may only receive money through the Henry & Friends Memorial Fund once in a 12-month period.

I received a donation from the Angel Fund, but I don't want my pet to appear on social media. Is that allowed?

Facebook posts and other marketing efforts are created to encourage donations that help more pets in need. Sharing your pet’s story allows us to demonstrate the impact of those donations and how individuals can significantly change a pet’s life. We strive to protect the privacy of our patients and clients; however, we consider participation in these marketing initiatives to be essential.

What we do to raise funds and awareness?
Fundraising – in 2024 we held our first ‘Henry & Friends Memorial’ fundraiser. Through the efforts of our team and volunteers, we were able to raise $ 3,305.50 for the angel fund.

Locally made memorial candle sets – all proceeds to the Angel Fund.

Heart With Wings donates to the Memorial Fund in memory of each pet we help with end-of-life care.

Our community plays a crucial role in fundraising for the Angel Fund. We’ve been fortunate to receive donations from some of the families we’ve helped. Their generosity reflects the value they see in the care and service we provide, and their desire to extend this experience to other pets and families. This sense of community support is what keeps the Angel Fund going.

Where can I use the funds?
The funds can only be used at Heart With Wings: Coulter Veterinary Hospice Services. Funds cannot be transferred to other hospitals or emergency clinics.
Is there any maximum to the amount the Angel Fund will provide?
The Angel Fund has extremely limited funds. Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to provide gifts above $300. How much we can donate depends on the amount of funds available within the Memorial Fund.
My pet was nominated for funds and was denied. Does that mean the team working with me doesn’t care for my pet?
Thank you for your understanding! Our team members who are taking care of your pet are able to start the process for assistance, but we want to keep everything fair. That means they can’t vote on whether to grant funds since that could create a conflict of interest.

We consider several factors when awarding help, but some are outside of our team’s control and does depend on the funds readily available. We truly wish we could help everyone, but sometimes we face challenges due to a lack of donations. We really appreciate your support and understanding.
